Hackers hit Downeast Energy
“A security breach at Downeast Energy and Building Supply has exposed banking information of hundreds of customers and cost the company $150,000, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network first reported yesterday.
The Brunswick-based company fell victim to an email ‘phishing scam’ that gave hackers access to one of Downeast’s KeyBank accounts, according to a statement posted on the company’s website. The hackers transferred no more than $150,000 from the account and potentially viewed the private bank information of about 800 customers who make automatic electronic deposits. The hackers, apparently in eastern Europe, sent an email to a Downeast employee posing as KeyBank, with a link to a website asking for the company’s bank-issued username and password, according to the Portland Press Herald.”
